The following article takes as starting point the category of essential work instituted by world governments during the pandemic. In an attempt to investigate which epistemological echoes resonate in this nomination, we will read a novel that was published before the pandemics and presents one of today’s essential work underworlds: supermarkets. Through this anachronistic reading of Mano de obra, by Diamela Eltit, we will attend to explore the labor requirements of these prepandemic essential workers and look there for some epistemological knots that may anticipate the condensation of the essential as a political and cognitive category of the present.
