Mount Udalaitz towers over the Basque town of Arrasate-Mondragón and is visited by mountaineers and hikers for recreational and commemorative purposes. Two modern crosses have been erected on its heights and the foundations of an old Christian hermitage can also be seen. This paper seeks to deepen the understanding of Basque sacred mountains from field experience at the Udalaitz peak, through an anthropological perspective that takes into account the presences and absences of ritual elements in the high altitude landscape, the recreational and religious appropriation of the mountainous area and the nuances in the legends related to dragons in the Basque intangible heritage. In the considerations, the author analyzes the relationship of myths about dragons with ancient human sacrifices in the Celtic world and with the monastic phenomenon early in the Christianization of various European mountains.
