In this article we ask ourselves about the factors that allow the sustainability of the popular economy in the public spaces in which the free fairs of Chile are installed daily. We turn to the debates on the management of common goods raised by Elinor Ostrom, particularly from the identification of attributes that allow the sustainability of said goods. e reflections presented take as sources the data collected from interviews with stallholders, consumers, leaders of the trade fair union and municipal officials; as well as the participant observation from the weekly consumption in the fairs of the city of Santiago in the summer months during six years. Documents generated from fairground organizations, documents from state entities, official surveys and secondary sources on the evolution and development of fairs were consulted. We argue that the sustainability of free fairs is linked to the transformation of public spaces into a common good, a process in which the organization of fairgrounds in interrelation with state entities is essential. In the collective management of free fairs, the different attributes of the users identified by Ostrom are integrated, which as a whole facilitate the use and reconfiguration of streets and squares as a common heritage.
