Based on original materials from open-ended interviews and fieldwork in Hospitals, the purpose of this study is to analyse the relations between biomedicine and alternative therapies, from the point of view of the specialists in both fields who share the same institutional environment. We distinguish different perspectives according to their interests, personal experiences, and studies. 1) Physicians: a) existence of a previous motivation resulting from an individual search for health; b) interest in offering the sufferer other therapeutic options, keeping the alternative therapy practice controlled by subsuming it under the biomedical logic; and c) those who consider these options to be ineffective palliatives and health hazards. 2) Alternative therapies specialists: a) show an interest in making their practice visible and legitimising it by placing themselves as therapists working in a public and official institution, and b) show an interest in preserving the sense of their practice through the use of hiding strategies and the use of different discourses depending on who they address. We conclude that there is a diversity of circumstances that show different motivations, shaping a heterogeneous field in which the sense, scope and limits are negotiated daily.
