Abstract

This article analyzes the resignifications that the members of the Asociación Civil Isleños Unidos II, located in the Paraná River delta made of their identity. Its members identify themselves with their landscape, which they call “the island” and highlight the specificities of the “island culture”, alluding to the sedimentation of the activities developed by them and their European ancestors. Based on an ethnographic study, we examine the way in which they have recently included elements of meaning from the environmentalist discourse in their identity narratives. Within the framework of a historical confrontation with those whom they call “environmentalists”, it is observed that, although some of these elements of meaning were incorporated, they were also confronted. The metaphor: “The land without evil” with which a passenger motorboat was named could lead us to think that they redefined the founding milestone that marks the Europeans as their ancestors and that they reproduced a possible ancestry of the original groups. On the other hand, they included elements of meaning from the environmentalist discourse by naming the docks after different emblematic species of the “native flora and fauna”. However, they confronted these elements when referring to their being-in-the-world. They pointed out the co-construction of the island landscape through productive and living practices developed by them and their ancestors. In addition, they confronted the environmentalist discourse arguing that these practices do not represent a “danger” to the ecosystem, but rather a reciprocal care. These experiences are emotionally condensed in the expression “we created the delta”.
