Although early childhood education and its teachers have received increasing attention from the education field, there are still few empirical studies focused on this educational level in general, and on teacher education in particular. This article aims to contribute to the reconstruction of the historical series around preservice early childhood teacher education in Argentina between 1886 and 1997. The research examines the teacher’s professional profile as constructed by the curriculum plans approved during the whole period. Our review challenges some of the commonly accepted assumptions in the teacher education field and points towards new directions for future research. Among its main findings, the study suggests a process of progressive deprofessionalisation of teacher education programmes for early childhood education in Argentina throughout the 111 years studied.
