Drawing on the seminal works of Miguel Ángel Fronton (1989a), Ivis Corfis (1997) and Cacho Blecua (2006), the aim of this essay is to study the reception of the Histoire d’Olivier de Castille et Artus d’Algarbe in Castile. It will attempt to explain how the Castilian translator has worked to adapt the French text to prose and to the modes of literary representation prevalent in Castile. It will be assessed, in particular, whether the Castilian work is a literal translation of the French text or whether the target text offers any resistance to the source. We intend to show that these oppositions convey the cultural challenges implicit in the process of rewriting a story within a different culture.
