The aim of this paper is to critically re-read the interethnic disputes in the southern frontier (Malargüe, Mendoza) based on the event known as the “Tragedy of Chacay” in local historiography. Consequently, the focus is on the incidence and effect of certain hegemonic narratives around the idea of “tragedy” and the barbarisation of the Indigenous people involved, aimed at justifying the violent and definitive advance south of the Diamante River, under the control of the Indigenous societies -pehuenches- until the 1870s. Based on a historical-documentary methodology and a regional ethnohistorical approach, this paper reviews the research that allows us to account for the tenor of the frontier conflicts. It concludes by re-situating the magnitude of the original territorial defense tactics and the Mendoza Creole elite’s interest in definitively occupying southern Cuyo’s territories.
