Among the police of the province of Buenos Aires constructionsof otherness, although diverse, are representations that form recurrent pat-terns of interaction that, in some cases, are linked to violent practices. Un-derstanding that police violence, as many violent actions, has a relationalcharacter, we propose in these pages to analyze, from an ethnographic approach, the representations of two otherness with which citizens and crim-inals, as a platform for reflection on the logic of the linked abusive use oflegal force. We will study first how the police think they should be treated bycriminals and citizens, and then analyze how the deviation to this model isrelated to some forms of violence. Finally, we use the relationship betweenviolence and representations of otherness to reflect on what is commonlycalled “police autonomy.”
