The technological suitability of wood and its performances can transform a problematic tree species like Ligustrum lucidum (W. T. Aiton), "ligustro", into a resource contributing to the control of its population. The objective of this work was to identify uses of spontaneously grown ligustro wood in the native forest of the Magdalena party (Buenos Aires), based on its physical-mechanical properties and durability. For this purpose, its dimensional changes, hardness, static flexion, parallel compression and compression perpendicular to the fibers and natural durability were evaluated. Thus, it proved to have a semi-heavy, medium or moderately stable and hard wood, high modulus of breakage and very low modulus of elasticity in static flexion and very high values of breakage in tests of parallel and perpendicular compression to the fibers. Exposed to fungal degradation, it proved to be a resistant wood against the action of a strain responsible for chestnut rot. According to the results obtained, ligustro wood could be a potential substitute for native and / or exotic woods present in the market, contributing to the reduction of pressure on native forests, while the extraction of the ligustro would be itself a control strategy.
