Vaccines are complex instruments, capable of simultaneously generating the control and eradicating of diseases and producing scientific, political, economic, and social tensions and conflicts. In this article, we review the literature on the birth of the vaccine with Edward Jenner and its expansion throughout the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, highlighting the tensions generated not only in the scientific field but also in the larval healthcare systems. We also address the scientific developments of the late 19th century, framed within the birth of bacteriology in the West, and the complexities of the implamentation of vaccines and vaccination campaigns in Ibero-America.
