Changes in land use and land cover (LULC) have consequences for sedimentation processes. This study focuses on the Chavantes reservoir, Brazil, given its importance for power supply, tourism, irrigation and other uses. The objective was to analyse LULC changes between 1990 and 2022 and their influence on the water quality of the reservoir. The Normalised Difference Suspended Sediment Index (NDSSI) and the Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) were used. The areas of interest were selected based on water quality data collected. It was observed that during the late rainy season there is a higher concentration of NDSSI. Meanwhile the NDVI response during the dry season shows the lowest values, indicating the reduction of vegetation cover, this is due to agricultural encroachment and in some cases also towards urban areas. Furthermore, where there was a transition from pasture to agriculture, higher NDVI values correlated with higher NDSSI concentration. Thus, results highlight the importance of monitoring land use changes and their impacts on water quality.
