This article seeks to separate two research fi elds related to the basis of the thomistic doctrine of science. On the one hand, the area which would be entitled “Thomistic epistemology”, and on the other hand, the thomistic esse as keystone of the doctrine of science in Thomas. The fi rst one is in debt to a perspective of analysis which is typical of modern philosophy, and in a special way, of the scholastic Thomism. The second, however, wants to show that it is necessary to start from the thomistic esse again as the foundation of science, as a person focuses to get to know the substances (extramental substances). In turn, the second area will be outlined by itself when the fi rst one is deconstructed.
