During the XXth century, Latin American states implemented political programs that showed different ways of conceiving the Nation. The indigenist policies of the first decades, followed by flows that favored mestizaje, to the multicultural forms of the present, respond to ideological positions about the form that the nations must adopt in their postcolonial construction. There have been many Latin American thinkers who critically observed these proposals and we propose here to make a brief tour of some of these ideas. We will return to the work of José Vansconcelos to try to understand the elements on which the ideology of mestizaje was based. We will also take the reflections of Rodolfo Stavenhagen and Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui to review the criticisms of this model and contribute to the approach from which the nation can be thought of in Latin America. This theoretical framework will allow us to reflect on conflict in the Nation, hegemonic relations and the place of heterogeneity in multicultural proposals. This itinerary will allow us to think of the nations in Latin America and our relationship as researchers with these political projects.
