Gift exchange, the distribution of spoils, and acts of generosity as means of producing and reinforcing social bonds are aspects of the Cantar de Mio Cid that have been extensively studied by scholars over time. However, the connections established between el Cid, the Monastery of San Pedro de Cardeña, and the Cathedral of Santa María de Burgos have not been sufficiently explored. In this context, by incorporating the theory of the gift developed by anthropologists and considering the specific historical events that shaped the protagonist’s decisions, this work aims to enhance the understanding of the intentions and underlying implications of the donations made by the protagonist to these two ecclesiastical and political institutions of medieval Castile.
