This article seeks to analyse the main characteristics and to trace the precedents of a particular set of works that we will call “Archival Painting”. In that way, we will define contemporary art practices that focus their interest on the relationship between painting and certain spaces of circulation, storage and display. We claim that these works are viewed from a double horizon: firstly, the history of art and the painting itself as a specific language. Secondly, the role that painting plays on the current characteristics of contemporary visual culture. From there on, we will put forward the following questions. How is the relationship between painting and image? How is the materiality of the painting recovered by these art practices? What is the political dimension proposed by these paintings?
