This paper attempts to introduce some issues regarding the problem of causality as a basic concept of human cognition and as a structural semantic relation in discourse. It will try to present some of the approaches that address the problem from a philosophical and psychological perspective, then some questions about causality will be discussed from a linguistic point of view, with special emphasis on the proposals made by the Cognitive Semantic approach, specifically Conceptual Metaphor Theory, embodiment approaches and the Theory of Force Dynamics in language. Some of their assumptions will be discussed from the perspective of experimental psycholinguistics.
