In what terms may anthropology interact with public policies? In this article I explore their possible relationship appealing to experiences of research in the field of illicit practices and their treatment by the State. It is an effort to reveal some problems associated with initiatives of diagnosis and intervention in the lives of people, groups and societies, which are related to phenomena that often representa problem for "the society", from the point of view of the 'State' and, consequently, are configuredas "State problems" that must be reversed. With the expectation that reflections based on the analysis of ethno-graphic situations will contribute to think about the real extent of such reversals, I conclude by affirming the importance of reconstructing the perspective from which a demand is born to reach an understanding of the perspectives that define the life of people—which are often reduced to certain problematicas pects that become the objects of the policies of Government and State.
