This conception of freedom is intrinsically linked to the public sphere. Analyzing this link between freedom and the public sphere, this article shows: 1) That, according to Arendt, the displacement of freedom to the realm of privacy and interiority is mainly an effect of the emergence of what she calls "the social"; 2) That philosophies centered on the will, although they try in some cases to give public existence to freedom, continue to think of it in terms of interiority; 3) That the notion of action constitutes the link between freedom and the public sphere. The analysis offers both a diagnosis of the role of the notion of freedom in contemporary societies and a basis for its reconsideration.
