The world is near to the depletion threshold of both fresh water and fossil fuels, two problems that are mutually articulated in hydrocarbon exploitation by hydraulic fracturing. On the basis of the concepts of acummulation by dispossession, metabolic rift and capital’s second contradiction, this paper analyzes the relationship between water and fracking in Vaca Muerta, the major formation of unconventional resources of Argentina, as well as one of the most important in the world. To do this, it uses official, public statistics, reports conducted by environmentalist and corporative organizations, specialized scholar bibliography, and journalistic information. The findings show substantial inconsistencies in the sources regarding the water consumption of the unconventional hydrocarbon operations in the region, a tariff policy far removed from international standards, and the growing emergence of hydric conflicts between capital, the state and the civil society where the social protest generated by the metabolic rift of the water-communities relationship challenges to the hegemonic narrative.
