This essay explores a number of narrative and visual works produced during the Argentine Nation State formation in order to rethink the border figures of cautivas (captives) and lenguaraces. Thus, it puts into question the Manichean and binary images about the Argentine national identity fostered by the state logic in times of the so-called the Conquest of the Desert. The perspective taken in this article is politically relevant since it invites the reader not only to think beyond the hegemonic (rigid, binary, centralist and substantialist) sociocultural segmentation but it also questions (in past and present) those who had been captured, obscured and silenced by the Nation State logic.
