Compulsory schooling in common education is part of our history, defended from very different ideological positions; and although society ideological positions; and although society expresses its need and defends it, in recent times it has been questioned. My studies in the history of education have addressed compulsory and free education in the last decades of the 19th century, and my interest, in this article, lies in delving into some aspects that remained on my work agenda. My objective is to explore and analyze the speeches of officials and educators about the legal mandate of common education laws (dictated in provinces and in the Nation), and their compliance in effective practice, limited to very precise and concrete situations in the province of Buenos Aires and national territories. This is an approach to a very complex topic, and a broad time unit, 1870-1920.
