In this paper we propose to review a persistent notion regarding interethnic relationships in the second half of the nineteenth century, consisting on the effect of indigenous raids, malones, on Christian cattle in border areas. We maintain that the impact of such violent practices has been traditionally exaggerated by the uncritical acceptance of some figures that circulated contemporarily to the facts. Through a review of the documentation we conclude that it was in fact much smaller, and irregular in nature. A general overview is offered regarding the indigenous economy and some related topics, subsequently the data that support our point of view are presented, proposing at the end some possible lines of research.
