The paper deals with the role of memory in the definition and the discussion about the identity of one of the most important technoscientific and industrial territory in France: the city of Grenoble. Based on interviews and written sources underlining the tradition and the dynamics of relations between science, industry, and high education, we analyze the main arguments of a hegemonic discourse promoting the Grenoble model. However, such a convergence of local actors is also contested from inside. In particular, local groups of citizens object to the exclusive priority toward the production of science, technology and knowledge-based industry: they contest the technoscientist and productivist model that underlies such a priority, and denounce the convergent interests of the political, economic and scientific local elites. Finally, the paper reflects upon the political ambivalence of the hegemonic discourse of the technopole.
