This paper seeks to establish how the Apellate Body of the World Trade Organization has dealt with trade disputes where the protection of the environment was present. In particular, attention is paid to those dispute in which the measures adopted by a Member of the WTO were founded in the exceptions of Article XX of the General Agreement. First we set out the basis for the Apellate Body to apply or interprete general international law not covered by the WTO agreements. Afterwords we describe reports of the Apellate Body related with the interpretation of Article XX of the General Agreement.
