The study of the factors that affect academic achievement and the university dropout rate is a highly relevant issue, particularly following the massification of higher education and the consequ ences on equity. This paper analyzes and reviews the results of academic research conducted from 2002 to 2012 about factors influencing students' performance and dropout at Argentine public universities. The databases and additional sources on which the study is based help identify relevant scientific production: the EBSCO Academic Search Premier, Google Scholar, and projects carried out within the framework of the Incentive Program for Faculty - Researchers covering research output at national universities . The paper describes the main factors influencing the academic performance and the dropout rate at Argentine public universities and presents the theoretical models and methodology used to carry out these studies. In particular, two theoretical perspect ives are dominant. Economists usually follow the educational production function model and apply different econometric methods to estimate causal effects. In contrast, sociologists and specialists in education follow Vincent Tinto's model for institutional departure and Pierre Bourdieu's reproduction theory. In their field of study, they employ a qualitative approach and descriptive statistics to analyze the data. The paper concludes with a review of this literature, highlighting the main factors affecting academic achievement and dropout at Argentine public universities and analyzes the scope and limitations of the theoretical models and the methodology employed.
