In the professions’ field, social work has tried to be hierarchical, in order to accumulate capital to position itself betterly, achieve recognition, prestige and authority. Being a historically feminized profession, the struggles that it has carried out have particularities since it is inserted within a field with masculine domination. We analyze in this article the characteristics of the hierarchy sought by the profession, we ask ourselves: What does it mean to hierarchize the profession? Why is this a goal of social work? and What strategies / actions does this hierarchy entail? We maintain that the privileged strategies deployed have not been subversive strategies of the masculine structure of the field; we maintain that social work seeks to ensure respectability in its professional practice and does so through perpetuating the configuration of the field.
