This paper begins with contemporary critiques of P. Bourdieu's theory of practice that point to the determinism of habitus. To seek a solution to this problem, I propose a reading based on Merleau-Ponty's phenomenology, which allows for the incorporation of the dialectic between the habitual and actual body, and Bourdieu's key, but underdeveloped, notion of body countertraining as a nondeterministic reworking of the dispositions/schemata of perception, action, and thought (habitus). Finally, I illustrate the power of this notion through a brief rereading of studies on the learning of new body techniques in adapted sports and on the experiences of “felows” within elite education. The paper concludes by pointing out, against determinism, the potential of a rereading of Bourdieu's approach inspired by Merleau-Ponty for socio-anthropological research.
