This article aims to show that the focus of textual criticism has shifted from diachrony to synchrony, as is especially perspicuous in the Maasian concept of error. I will argue that this shift is also present in contemporary conceptualizations of stemmata. Indeed, a modern stemma, despite symbolizing the genealogy of witnesses, has a synchronic function: to describe the present system of relations among preserved or reconstructable witnesses to allow for the elimination of lectiones singulares. In contrast to the usual assumption, it provides scant information about the past of the witnesses, partly because of the large number of lost manuscripts.
