A study based on hydrological modeling was carried out in order to evaluate the impact of land use change and rainfall increase on groundwater recharge in a semi-arid sedimentary catchment of the Western Pampas (El Morro basin, San Luis), which has suffered severe erosive processes in the past three decades due to abrupt self-collapse of loessic sedimentary deposits in areas that show local flooding associated with high water table levels. Also, we analyze the impact of river network connectivity and the increase of flooded areas on peak flow rate, in order to link the rapid growth of the new rivers with the evolution of the physical environment where processes of erosion, transport and sedimentation prevail. Increased precipitation and changes in land cover as a replacement of forest/pastures for annual crops are identified as the potential causes of high water table levels in the region, given the greater capacity of native coverings to capture and evapotranspire rainwater thanks to greater root depth. Moreover, it is showed that the expansion of the hydrographic network and the increase of flooded areas have had an important impact on flood events, causing the rapid growth of the new water courses.
