Use of platinum in drug delivery

Abstract

Platinum-based compounds have found widespread application in cancer treatment and retained to have a crucial role in widespread clinical use, especially for the management of various malignant tumors such as bladder, colorectal, ovarian, cervical, testicular, lung, head and neck. However, several dose-limiting toxicity and drug resistance problems due to the intensive use of platinum compounds bring limitations. Besides well-known platinum drugs; cisplatin, carboplatin, and oxaliplatin, combined new platinum drug formulations are being developed to enhance their therapeutic effect concomitantly with the reduction undesirable side effects. The nano delivery devices that platinum encapsulated with high efficiencies such as carbon nanotubes, polymer conjugates, dendrimers, micelles, liposomes, and nanoparticles present promising preclinical and clinical results.
