La condición testimonial de un escritor en transición: Memorias curiosas de Juan Manuel Beruti

Abstract

Estudiar la condición testimonial de Juan Manuel Beruti (1777-1856) es el objetivo principal del artículo. Para ello se hace una breve revisión teórica sobre las escrituras autobiográficas y sus características particulares a fines del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX, para luego realizar un análisis discursivo de Memorias curiosas, su extensa crónica que relata los sucesos relevantes ocurridos en la ciudad de Buenos Aires entre 1717 y 1855. Se utiliza como eje de análisis la definición de testigo propuesta por Paul Ricoeur para comprender el texto como un testimonio.This article examines the testimonial condition of Juan Manuel Beruti (1777-1856). To do so, it provides a brief theoretical review about autobiographical writing and its characteristics in late 18th century and early 19th century, and then performs a discourse analysis of Memorias curiosas, an extensive chronicle about the main events ocurring in the city of Buenos Aires from 1717 to 1855. The definition of “witness”, proposed by Paul Ricoeur, is used to understand the text as a testimony.
