Corrosion is one of the most common pathologies of reinforced concrete worldwide. This implies high repair costs to ensure the projected lifetime. Using inorganic corrosion inhibitors is one of the solutions, which is highly known in the industry, but they turned out to be toxic for humans and the environment. In this background, plant-based corrosion inhibitors are emerging as an alternative with hopeful results. The performance of aqueous extracts based on yerba mate and oregano is analysed in this study as possible corrosion inhibitors. ADN420 steel bars were exposed to a corrosive solution, with and without the addition of natural extracts. After 30 days, with the X-ray diffraction technique and the Open Circuit Potential test, the inhibitory effect of natural compounds was confirmed.
