The objective was to determine in porcine placentas of mummified fetuses the location of collagen according to the thickness fiber. Placentas from crossbred sows from farms in the south of the province of Córdoba were collected after delivery and were processed. The fetoplacental units with mummified fetuses were selected and the gestational age was determined. Placentas of 60 and 90 days of pregnancy were collected. Histological sections were stained with the modified histochemical stain Picrosirius red and were examined under polarizing microscope, which allows differentiation of Type I collagen (yellowish orange to orange-red birefringence) and Type III (green or greenish-yellowish birefringence). The arrangement of I and III collagen fibers, their thickness and birefringence distribution were analyzed using the High Score value and statistically evaluated in comparison with previous studies performed on placentas of viable fetuses. An association was established between placental condition and the presence of fibers according to their thickness. In placentas of mummified fetuses type I collagen fibers were poor and surrounded by abundant type III. An optimal placental microenvironment is essential for the development of physiological processes involved in maintaining pregnancy. An extracellular matrix with altered collagen composition and distribution would induce changes in the microenvironment incompatible with the normal pregnancy development and fetal viability.
