The article describes and analyses the Autonomous Egress Support Programme in Argentina, a national initiative implemented in 2017 to facilitate the transition to adulthood of young people under state custody, and its implementation in a sub-national space such as the province of Córdoba. It uses a flexible qualitative methodology. It is guided by a logic of inductive analysis and by the premises of data-driven theorisation. Narrative sections are selected from semi-structured interviews, both individual and group, conducted voluntarily with young people, educators, institutional referents and members of the team that coordinates the PAE Córdoba in two time periods, 2021-2022 and 2024-2025. They are combined with bibliographic analysis and the examination of documents such as standards, technical reports, and outstanding final graduation works, which are considered grey literature. It addresses the issue of young people without parental care, its causes and the implications of prolonged institutionalisation, framing the debate in care policies and autonomy. It discusses their scope and challenges in the context of tensions between autonomy and dependence, assistance and care, reparation, federalisation, and asymmetries, as well as child or family support policies. It concludes that despite advances in child protection, the event of egress is an aspect of the institutionalisation process that highlights unresolved problems for children.
