Dystopian narratives share a common, often overlooked element: the breaking point of supply chains. This event is typically portrayed as a domino effect where the collapse of communications occurs first, shortly followed by the interruption of energy, water and food provision, and medical supplies. This scenario is usually also implies the collapse of transportation systems due to traffic jams, bridge failures, the penalization of railways, and the suspension of flights. Consequently, the trope of survivors and the various iterations of the homo homini lupus motif often lead to reflections where ethical dilemmas take precedence over political debates. Furthermore, the inadequacy of modern theoretical frameworks to explain the growing opacity and the acceleration of technological systems, along with the overlapping of temporalities and worldviews, has opened a space for various genres and scenes such as theory fiction, new weird, science fiction, collapsology, and other modes of writing that foster new forms of speculative thinking. In this paper, I discuss a realistic form of dystopian narratives by analyzing the strategies used to represent the issue of logistics in Tim Maughan’s novel Detalle infinito (Maughan, 2022) [Infinite Detail (FSG, 2019)] from which I extrapolate some provisional conclusions for Argentine politics and our role in the global economy.
