The city of Concepción is located in a very active tectonic area. The city was moved in the past close to the Biobío River, but it was still affected by earthquakes, as the last one that occurred on February 27, 2010. Much of the coastal configuration of this deltaic complex is conditioned by the basaltic sands delivered by the phreatomagmatic eruption of the Antuco volcano that took place 9700± 600 years BP. The eruption of the Sollipulli volcano that took place 2900±60 years ago caused significant geomorphological variations in the upper areas of the Biobío watershed. The lakes Moquehue and Aluminé are no longer supplying water to this watershed. In this sense, the wastershed is misfitted in relation to the original one originated from 4 lakes. Present floods occur but there at lower rates.
