In this paper, we analyze an editorial published in Cais magazine, Portuguese street paper affiliated to the INSP. Based upon CDA, we explore the synchronic-diachronic method to analyze one of the testimonies in the editorial, signed by a man in street situation. We show how the text explores the opposition between material poverty and “spiritual poverty”, the last classified as being more serious than the first, which seems to mitigate the severity of material poverty, put in the background. The text focuses on possible solutions to poverty only in actions of non-poor people, minimizing the agency of people in poverty to trigger changes in their situation.
