The present review aims to present the findings of various studies, conducted from 1978 to 2009, on the complex phenomenon of retirement and its health impact. It also takes into account relevant variables involved in this process, such as social support networks, proposed by the psychological stress model, gender and attitudes to retirement, as external variables of that model. Bibliographical material was located by means of the implementation of a strategy of database search. The electronic search was complemented by one of manual nature, starting from the reference lists of the selected researches, in libraries of public educational institutions. From the 98 consulted articles published in scientific journals, books and dissertations, 62 were selected, according to their relevance in relation to the subject of this review. Based on the results obtained through the content analysis, according to the model of psychological stress, it is concluded that retirement becomes a factor of psychosocial stress for elders and may contribute to the development of some psychophysiological disorder. Attitudes to retirement, social support networks and gender are involved in this process.
