Learning cell division requires complex reasoning and therefore a way to address it is through the creation of external representations by the student. One possible strategy is the construction of animations through a modification of the Stopmotion technique known as Slowmation, which allows to create videos with resources that are available in secondary school classrooms. Thus, in this paper it is evaluated how an instructional design for cell division through its representation with animations, promotes the construction of meaning in high school classrooms. The proposal was developed with 71 students of 2nd year at three high schools in the city of Cordoba, Argentina (13-14 years old). For the evaluation, student dialogues were recorded throughout the animation process, photographic records were taken and at the end a survey was applied to students. From the results we found that creating animations allowed the construction of meanings, promoted the modification of ideas and created spaces for explaining concepts by the teacher, conceptual thinking among students and the identification of possible confusion that requires teacher intervention.
