However, the wide application of tetrachloroethylene, C2 Cl4 , as a solvent in dry cleaning laundries generates decomposition products that may affect the troposphere. In order to provide accurate data for the characterization of this species in gas phase, quantum mechanical calculations based on Density Functional Theory (DFT) have been performed. Particularly the functional B3LYP combined with the basis set 6-311+G(d) has been employed to make an structural, spectroscopic and thermochemical characterization of C2 Cl4 .These results can be used in the future to perform a detailed study of the kinetics and residence time of this compound in the atmosphere, which would allow to analyze its effects on human health and environment.
