This article reflects on the development of the collective organization of subway workers in Buenos Aires. Theoretical debates about institutionality and trade union representation are taken up in order to analyze the experience of creating a parallel trade union for the subway. This case fits into a context of reactivating the labor dispute in recent Argentine history. Starting from analysis of the empirical data, which consists predominantly of in-depth interviews with trade union delegates and activists, the challenges, tensions, risks and dilemmas that arise when building a new institution are set forth. Throughout the text, the form of the trade union and the delegate profile that this organization defends and establishes is characterized in open opposition to the trade union that legally represents the workers, the Automated Tramway Union (Unión Tranviarios Automotor), which is antagonistic to the institution being built.
