This paper surveys the most common word orderings in a corpus of Santiago del Estero Quichua texts (Quechua, Argentina). The objective is to elucidate the observed variations, examining the syntax-pragmatics interface, and to illustrate how changes in word order at the syntactic level have consequences and purposes at the discourse level. Among the results of this analysis, noteworthy observations include the strategic deployment of last positions in sentences for low accessibility referents which establish distinct connections with the subsequent context, variation in the order of main clauses as compared to dependent clauses, and modifications in constituent order that may be characteristic of particular text types or genres.
