The article addresses the transformations and alterations of physical space caused by hydrocarbon extraction in Malargüe (Mendoza, Argentina) using the Grounded Theory methodology. The study takes critical physical geography as its field of analysis for high-impact activities that act as agents of transformation in the biophysical and social environment, together with social studies of oil. In this sense, the objective is to identify the spatial dimension and social interrelationships of these transformations. Hydrocarbon exploitation in Malargüe produces permanent and temporary alterations and modifications in the physical environment. The use of Grounded Theory allowed for the development of categories such as physical footprint, pollution-risk, and social footprint, which structure the work and serve as tools to enrich the critical physical geography approach and its feedback with social studies of oil. As a result, these categories contribute to the discussion of the impact of hydrocarbon extraction in Malargüe, while seeking to define and systematize these impacts in the area.
