Edith Stein wrote her doctoral dissertation on empathy under Edmund Husserl’s guide. Empathy is a kind of intentional act by which we connect with the others in the world. Following Husserl’s analyses, Stein inquires into the I, the soul and the living body as the essential elements for understanding the phenomenon of empathy, the latter being not a mere formal relationship between empty poles, but a plentiful connection among persons. In this paper we aim to show how Stein, following Husserl, addresses the question of the body in view the problem of the manners of givenness of nature and spirit.
