The objectives of this study were to assess the risk factors for clinical endometritis (CE), and its effects on reproduction in Holstein cows (n = 303). Cows had their vaginal discharges (VD) checked for pus 21, 31 and 41 days postpartum. Plasma blood samples were analyzed for metabolites and metabolic hormones. Data were analyzed with PROC MIXED, PROC GENMOD and PROC PHREG from SAS. The risk for CE increased with abnormal calving (OR [odds ratio] = 2.21, P = 0.019), puerperal metritis (OR = 2.21, P = 0.095), prepartum NEFA (OR = 1.003, P = 0.045) and postpartum BHB (OR = 1.001, P = 0.010). The likelihood for having normal VD increased with time (~1% x dpp) and with normal calving. Cows with CE produced more milk (~2 kg/d), took 70 d longer to get pregnant and had twice higher risk for culling than normal cows. In conclusion, the risk for CE increases with abnormal calving, puerperal metritis, and negative energy balance. Affected cows take longer to get pregnant and are at higher risk for culling.
