Phytoestrogens are a chemically diverse group of compounds, with impact on the reproductive function of mammals. In this study the effects, of the methanolic extract (ExM) of fruits of Prosopis torquata on the reproductive functions of female Wistar rats, were studied by injection of ExM to neonates. Pups were distributed randomly among four groups. Three of them, fed with a phytoestrogen free diet, were injected with ExM, E (Estradiol) and vehicle (Clf) respectively and the other fed with a commercial diet (Cf) was injected with vehicle. Time to vaginal opening, serum levels of progesterone, luteinizant hormone and estradiol, were measured. Ovary histology was also studied. Females on ExM, showed and earlier vagina opening compared to Clf, but it did not differed with Cf. Ovaries, responded to treatments. The ExM acts as a natural endocrine disruptor affecting the estrous cycle of female rats, due to the possible presence of phytoestrogens.
