Halfway between education and spectacle, travelogues or travel films served, in the early years of the 20th Century, a double purpose. On the one hand, they allowed the spectator to embark on a virtual voyage to the represented spaces. On the other, they legitimated the intervention in colonial territories or the conquest and expansion of national territories still dominated by the Indian. In this essay, we study the intimate bonds that linked travel to the new techniques of mechanical reproduction in their double quality of virtual devices to explore the world and instruments of civilization. In this sense, we also examine the varied formal, thematic and discursive strategies taken up by the travelogue genre from photography.
