The mineralogical study and physicochemical characterization of petrified wood of the Tacuary Formation (Upper Permian) from the fossiliferous locality of Arroyo Vino, Department of Guairá, was carried out. The techniques employed include: in situ observations, sampling, macroscopic observation, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with backscattered electron detection (BSE) coupled to energy dispersive system (EDS) X-ray microanalysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Confocal Raman spectroscopy (CRS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Polymorphs of quartz, feldspar, calcite, heavy metal and rare earth minerals were identified. The recognized mineral association includes a heavy metal complex (with inclusions of zircon and traces of uranium). The results of this study have allowed the chemical and mineralogical analysis of the specimen, as well as the interpretation of the diagenetic processes involved in the fossil wood of the Tacuary Formation and its regional geological environment, in order to establish taphonomic, paleoclimatic, paleobiogeographic considerations and its mineralogical relationship with respect to the paleoenvironment.
