This paper aims to address one of the issues that began to acquire a growing centrality at the turn of the XIX to the XX century: the «question about the nation», through the intellectual work of a member of Argentine cultural and political elites. From the analysis of a number of historical works of Adolfo Saldías and his interventions in the press and other articles —that acted as a complement of his interpretation of the nineteenth–century Argentina— we confront these arguments within a context of historical debates that, at the same time, acquired in occasions a political connotation as they emphasized polemic topics. In this regard, we will take into account the diagnosis made by Saldías, relating the state of the Argentinean Nation, intended as an organic and objective unit, with a nationality that was still under construction, and depended of a subjective contribution of different social and political actors of the end– of–century Argentina.
